End of a chapter. Beginning another.
Tonight was our last night with freshmen class of FishAides. It's hard to believe that only a year I was sitting on that field, knowing who the new co-chairs were, realizing I would spend my life and the next year with them, knowing I had so much to learn.
And what a year it's been. Exec year for FishAides is nothing like freshmen year. It's so much better and so much harder all at the same time. There have been countless times when I hated it and wanted to quit, but then there were always those times when you knew it was all worth it.
Our goal is to develop leaders and to plug them into student government. And this year's group is going to excel in student government like few classes of FishAides have before them. We have had six COSGA hosts, fifteen ARC hosts, nine Muster hosts, four Buck Weirus reciepents, and a majority of them move into exec positions on their committee. While they truly are the leaders of Texas A&M, there's more to FishAides than that.
It's about learning to love people you never thought you would even like. Learning to work with people whom you are currently frustrated with and putting that aside. It's seeing someone else's passion and drive and being inspired by that. But really, there's more than that.
For me, it's about impacting forty-five people who will one day impact hundreds of others. When some of the freshmen and execs were talking about me, most of them noted how hard I push them. I expect huge things out of them, so they expect huge things from themselves. I aim high, so they aim higher. We get competitive in the best of ways and push each other to do it better, faster, harder.
I have honestly done my best to set an example for them that they can follow, and I have learned more about self-sacrifice than anything else in the process. When they lose a loved one, or school goes wrong, or they have no idea what they want or why they are here, that's when I have to be willing to drop everything to be there for them. Those moments have the greatest impact to share truth and wisdom. For me, that's worth every moment of lost sleep, grades, and my own enjoyment. I think I have learned most importantly that title, position, yourself, grades, and things don't matter. People do and that's it.
Next year is going to be amazing. With Daniel as my assistant director, I am fairly confident we could take over the world. don't worry, we'll keep it limited to Texas A&M for now.
We reveal co-chairs in the morning and I am thrilled. We get to begin changing forty lives all over again. Here we go....
